Composition
Each tablet contains:
- Finasteride – 2.5 mg
- Excipients – q.s.
Pharmacological Effects
Finasteride is a synthetic 4-azasteroid that acts as a specific competitive inhibitor of type II 5α-reductase, an intracellular enzyme that converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is the primary androgen responsible for prostate growth and hair follicle miniaturization in androgenetic alopecia.
By inhibiting DHT production:
- In the prostate: Finasteride reduces prostate volume, improving urinary symptoms in benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
- In the scalp: It prevents follicular miniaturization and promotes hair retention or regrowth in male pattern baldness.
Indications
- Treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men with an enlarged prostate.
- Off-label use in androgenetic alopecia (male-pattern hair loss), particularly in higher doses or in combination therapies.
- Adjunct in hormone therapy for transgender women (off-label, under supervision).
Recommended Dose
- The typical oral dose is 2.5 mg once daily, with or without food.
- Treatment is generally long-term, and clinical benefits may take several months to appear.
Side Effects
Common side effects include:
- Decreased libido
- Erectile dysfunction
- Ejaculatory disorders
- Breast tenderness or enlargement
Less common or serious effects may include:
- Depression or mood changes
- Testicular pain
- Allergic reactions (rash, swelling of lips or face)
- High-grade prostate cancer risk (rare, under investigation)
Contraindication
- Women (especially during pregnancy — can cause genital abnormalities in male fetuses)
- Children
- Individuals with known hypersensitivity to Finasteride or any excipient
Warning: Women who are or may be pregnant should not handle crushed or broken tablets.
