Description
Composition
Each tablet contains:
- Oxandrolone – 10 mg
- Excipients – q.s.
Pharmacological Effects
- Anabolic Activity: Stimulates protein synthesis and promotes positive nitrogen balance. Enhances muscle mass and strength in catabolic states. Increases bone mineral density (osteogenic effect).
- Metabolic Effects: Improves weight gain in wasting conditions. Reduces protein catabolism. May improve wound healing in trauma/burns.
- Androgenic Effects (Mild): Lower virilization potential compared to other AAS. Minimal estrogenic conversion (reduced gynecomastia risk).
Indications
- Catabolic States: Severe burns (>20% TBSA), post-operative recovery, chronic infections with wasting.
- Musculoskeletal: Osteoporosis (adjunct to primary therapy), delayed fracture healing.
- Other: Hereditary angioedema prophylaxis, Turner syndrome (growth promotion in pediatric cases).
Recommended Dose
- Adults – Catabolic States (Burns/Post-op): 10 mg 2–4 times daily (20–40 mg/day). Duration: 2–4 weeks (short-term use only).
- Osteoporosis: 10–20 mg daily in divided doses.
- Hereditary Angioedema: 10 mg twice daily (prophylaxis).
- Pediatric (Specialist Use – Turner Syndrome/Growth Delay): 0.05 mg/kg/day (adjusted quarterly), max 0.1 mg/kg/day.
Key Administration Notes:
- Divided dosing 2–4 times daily with meals.
- Hepatic monitoring required – LFTs every 2 weeks.
Side Effects
- Hepatotoxicity (elevated liver enzymes, cholestatic jaundice).
- Cardiovascular issues (hypertension, altered lipids, fluid retention).
- Endocrine disruption (testicular atrophy, menstrual irregularities).
- Androgenic effects (acne, oily skin, hair loss, virilization in females).
- Psychiatric effects (mood swings, aggression, dependency risk).
- Monitor: LFTs, lipids, hematocrit, and electrolytes regularly.
Contraindications
- Pregnancy (Category X).
- Prostate or male breast cancer.
- Severe hepatic, renal, or cardiac impairment.
- Hypercalcemia.
Note: Treatment duration is typically limited to 2–4 weeks for acute conditions.
